Stagger Lee Saturdays - Billy Glenn and Shelley Taylor

Well, ladies and gentlemen, Christmas is over. I hope you all had a good one, and that everyone got lots of good swag. Since Christmas is done, and today's Saturday, that means it's time for Stag to return to the blog!

Here's 2009's final version of Stag, and boy is it ridiculous. You'll hear Billy Glenn (official) singing the story of Stag, with interjections and organ by Shelley Taylor (see also).

Did I mention this is silly? I found it via WFMU, of course.

Stagger Lee Saturdays - "Studio Group"

Here's a musical mystery. This album was pretty clearly released to cash in on the runaway success of Marty Robbins' album "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs." But it's been credited to at least two different "artists": Billy The Kid (an obvious pseudonym, as well as a song title on Robbins' album) and Tex Johnson and His Six-Shooters. (The info here suggests that these recordings may have existed before the Robbins album was a hit, and just repackaged under the misleading title, most likely in 1960 or '61.)

This version of Stag is spelled differently than any other, as "Mr. Staggerly." (The album also contains a recording of Bonnie Parker's "The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde," though it's spelled "Barney and Clyde." This cheapo record label just can't spell.)

This week, we once again hear the "When you lose your money, learn to lose" refrain from Furry Lewis's version of the song, which appears to have been the template for this recording.
