Stagger Lee Saturdays: The Best of Stagger Lee

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pride and no small amount of trepidation that She'll Grow Back presents a compilation entitled "Talkin' Bout The Baaad Man: The Best of Stagger Lee."

The choices made to cut this down to under 80 minutes, or one CD's worth, were hard and are likely to be controversial. (I intend to remedy this with further volumes of "the best.") Hopefully, most of you will find your favorite version of Stag on this collection. If not, that's what the comments section down there is for. I'm not writing up special liner notes for this; I've written up each song in its own post, which you'll find links to below. Arranged chronologically, these 22 tracks embody the main themes of Stagger Lee the ballad, the folk song, the blues song, and the rocker.

Tracklisting:

1926: Ma Rainey
1927: Frank Hutchison
1927: Furry Lewis
1928: Cliff Edwards
1928: Mississippi John Hurt
1944: Woody Guthrie

Repost: Random Christmas Tracks

The more observant of you may have noticed that my bandwidth is frequently unavailable this month -- somehow, some way, I'm using about three times as much as I'm alotted (which is about ten times what I was using before December). As with the previous time this happened, I can't find any links here that weren't here this time last month -- I guess all the self-promotion I did in December has paid off. Paid off for my webhoster, that is.

Since they won't sell me more than 50 GB a month for a justifiable amount (70 GB costs more than twice what 50 GB costs -- to host the bandwidth I've used up this month, they want 5 times what I normally pay rather than 3 times) I've had to close the open access to my file directory, which I liked keeping open for the curious and the leechers. And I'll be deleting files from the directory much sooner.

All that is a long, drawn-out way of saying, here are all the individual tracks I posted during December which aren't part of another collection. (I'm also slowly fixing the original zips, so they work for everyone.) Links to the original posts:

The Chipmunk Song
Dennis Wilson's Birthday Post
Ethan Lipton - Gift Basket
John Cale - Child's Christmas In Wales
Lee Hartsfeld - Christmas Is Coming Again, Ha Haaa
Meco - What Can You Get A Wookiee For Christmas...
Okkervil River - Listening To Otis Redding At Home During Christmas
Raul Malo - Marshmallow World
The Jackson Five - I Saw Mommy --ing Santa Claus
The Sads - Santa
The Sonics - Santa Claus
Those Transatlantics - Boys and Children, Sing For Summer

Have Yourself A Depressing Little Christmas

Here it is, folks, the first of two CD-length mixes from me this holiday season. I had a hard time whittling this down to fit onto one CD, but the primary reason for making these two mixes in the first place was to give my friends CDs at our Christmas party. I hope this album doesn't bum you out too much -- if you're worried about it, don't listen to any of it till Tuesday, when I'll post the antidote, entitled "Have Yourself A Magical Little Christmas."

Tracklist:

Have Yourself A Bluesy Little Christmas

Here is 2007's second mix. This one focuses on rhythm, blues, and soul with some hints of gospel thrown in. (2008's mixes will be posted on the 21st and the 23rd of the month.)

You'll note that this CD and ...Country Little Christmas both started with variations on "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." I actually had another one for the country CD, a Buck Owens tune called "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" but it didn't make the cut.

This CD contains two of my favorite Christmas records of all time, "White Christmas" by The Drifters and "Merry Christmas Baby" by Chuck Berry. I like both these songs so much they got their own posts earlier this month.

Tracklist:

01. Mark Anthony - Mama's Twistin' With Santa Claus
02. Lightnin' Hopkins - Santa
03. Canned Heat - Christmas Blues
04. The Drifters - White Christmas
05. Ray Charles - Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
06. Elvis Presley - Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me)
07. Chuck Berry - Merry Christmas, Baby
08. Ike and Tina Turner - Merry Christmas Baby

Have Yourself A Country Little Christmas

Here is one of last year's two CD-length mixes. This one focuses on country, western swing, bluegrass and folk music. (In two days, I'll post the other mix from '07, focusing on blues and soul.)

I had a hard time whittling this down to one CD's worth of music. At the earliest stage, I had almost three hours of music to pick from, all songs on the theme which I loved. (The second mix was a little easier to choose from -- I only had to delete about half an hour from that one.) I'm well aware this is a totally subjective collection of "country" Christmas music -- you'll notice there's not one note, not one second of "new country" -- the only hitmakers on this CD recorded back in the 60's or earlier. That's MY country music.

Tracklist:

01. George Jones - My Mom and Santa Claus
02. Tennessee Ernie Ford (with The Mellomen featuring Thurl Ravenscroft) - A Root'n Toot'n Santa Claus
03. Asleep At The Wheel - Santa Loves To Boogie
04. Whit Hill and John Latini - Going With My Cousin To See Santa At The Mall
05. Bill Monroe And His Bluegrass Boys - Christmas Time's A Comin'
06. Earl Scruggs - Jingle Bells
07. Jerry Webb - Christmas Time On The County Line
08. John Fahey - In The Bleak Midwinter
09. Bobby Goldsboro - Look Around You (It's Christmas)
10. The Wailers - Christmas Spirit
11. Bill Kelly - Here Comes Christmas
12. Del McCoury - Call Collect On Christmas
13. Roger Christian - Little Mary Christmas
14. Woody Guthrie - Hannukah Dance (alternate take)
15. Brigid Kaelin - Mazel Tonk
16. Mindy Smith - My Holiday
17. Nancy Hanson - All Wrapped Up
18. Michael Bishop - Rock-A-Billy Christmas
19. Mark Jungers and The Whistling Mules - The Christmas Song
20. Brenda Lee - I'm Gonna Lasso Santa Claus

Have Yourself A Mellow Little Christmas

Here's the second of 2006's two Christmas mixes I compiled. The mixes from '06 and '07 (stay tuned!) don't have covers uploaded, since I made all the covers by hand with paper cutouts and stickers and such. I'll probably put together covers for this year's two mixes, though I'm planning to continue with the handmade covers for the hardcopies my friends get.

Now, for about as long as they've existed, I've been a fairly faithful reader of two music blogs: You Ain't No Picasso and WFMU's Beware Of The Blog. But until December '06, I hadn't bothered to explore the rest of the MP3 blogosphere. Christmas music changed all that. For the first December in recent memory, my job didn't entail dealing on a personal level with enraged customers eight hours every single day, which meant that the ever-elusive "spirit of the season" was a lot easier to find. And, when I wasn't forced to listen to Christmas music on my employer's radio station, I found that I kind of missed it. So during that month, I downloaded more than a gig of Christmas music from all the assorted MP3 blogs out there. Some of them became my new best friends, and some I only visit each December. That's why this blog owes its very existence to Christmas music. (Well, that, and my collection of "Stagger Lee.")

Tracklist:

01. Aimee Mann - The Christmas Song
02. Combusible Edison - Christmastime Is Here
03. Diana Ross and The Supremes - White Christmas
04. Simon and Garfunkel - Comfort and Joy
05. Tom Waits - Silent Night
06. Enya - Oiche Chiun (Silent Night)
07. Pedro The Lion - I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day
08. Belle and Sebastian - O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
09. Dayna Manning - It's In Every One Of Us
10. The Coctails - First Snowfall
11. Math and Physics Club - Marshmallow World
12. The Beach Boys - Morning Christmas
13. Sarah McLachlan - Song For A Winter's Night
14. Travis - River
15. Chris Isaak - Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas

Have Yourself A Rockin' Little Christmas

Here's one of the two CD mixes I put together in 2006 for all my friends. (Come back Sunday for the second one, Have Yourself A Mellow Little Christmas, and I'll also explain how Christmas music was my introduction to MP3 blogs.) Two years ago, I was celebrating having a computer and regular net access for the first time in literally years. Also, for the first time in ages, due to changes in my job, I was really digging on Christmas music, and the spirit of peace and love I hadn't gotten much of for years. This is a nice rocking comp, mostly composed of stuff I'd downloaded all December (though I did rip some stuff, less than I've done since then).

A few words on how I compiled these: I tried not to include things that I heard on the radio, unless I loved them beyond all reason. Even the 24-hour Christmas-format radio stations with the widest playlists would only play about three songs from this CD. Looking back on it, I would probably reorder the two mixes from '06, since I put them together in less than a day after deciding to do it, but they're presented here as I assembled them originally, due mostly to laziness on my part, and for continuity for any of my friends who may download.

Tracklist:

01. Run-DMC - Christmas In Hollis
02. The Beach Boys - Santa's Beard
03. They Might Be Giants - Santa's Beard
04. Darlene Love - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
05. The Brian Setzer Orchestra - 'Zat You, Santa Claus?
06. Erlend Oye - Last Christmas
07. The Ventures - Sleigh Ride
08. The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
09. Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan - God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / We Three Kings
10. Cotton Top Sanctified Singers - Christ Was Born On Christmas Morn
11. Jill Sobule - Jesus Was A Dreidel Spinner
12. The Royal Guardsmen - Snoopy's Christmas
13. Aimee Mann and Grant Lee Phillips - You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Here's a collection of several songs by Mike Doughty, and many many versions of "Dead Flowers".

Stagger Lee Saturdays - Everyone in the world, volume two

And here are more. This zip file comprises the other third of the Stagger Lee versions I've posted on this blog. Volume Two contains Dave Van Ronk, The Downchild Blues Band, Fats Domino, Furry Lewis, Ma Rainey, Mississippi John Hurt, P. J. Proby, R. L. Burnside, Samuel L. Jackson, Stagger Lee (the band), the unnamed "Studio Group", Taj Mahal, Tommy Roe, and Wilson Pickett. I'll be deleting the individual files in the next few days, so if you want just a few, grab 'em now. (I currently have everything in an open directory for your convenience.)

Stagger Lee Saturdays - Everyone in the world, volume one

Ladies and gentlemen, I know it looks like I haven't been posting anything for a while, but I've been doing some work behind the scenes of the ol' blog here this week. I won't be posting anything new this week, but my disk space is full. I'll be spending some time zipping up all the old files, posting links here, then deleting them so I can add more new stuff. (I've also updated all the old zip files, since most of them ended up deleted.)

So I bring you, Stagger Lee Saturdays, Volume One. This zip file contains Archibald, Bob Dylan, Chris Whitley and Jeff Lang, Cliff Edwards, Dion, Dr. John, Elvis Presley, Frank Hutchison, Ike and Tina Turner (times two), Jerry Lee Lewis, Marseilles Figs, Mike Bloomfield, Neil Diamond, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Pacific Gas and Electric, and Pat Boone. Collect them all, now with one easy click. By this time next week, I hope to have the entire disk cleaned off, lots of zip files posted here, and a new start to posting more songs.

Chicken Phat!

I have to be completely honest here, or what's the point? I love "Chicken Fat." Ever since I first heard it last month, I've been trying to post it to this blog in some way. I got my chance Sunday, but here's a collection of songs about chickens and fat and, yes, schmaltz. (It's entirely appropriate that my post about schmaltz also includes my first post of a Pat Boone song.)

This is the second volume in a VERY irregular series of fun collections, entitled Phat Booty Beats. The first volume was all pirate music, collected two and a half years ago to commemorate the first annual Pirate Movie Night at my house. Volume three, when it comes, will likely be subtitled "Does Sir Mix-A-Lot Like Booty?"

Phat Booty Beats Volume Two: Chicken Phat

01. Robert Preston - Chicken Fat
02. Fats Domino - The Fat Man
03. Corky and The Juice Pigs - Chicken In A Bucket
04. Carl Malcolm - Fatty Bum Bum
05. Lynn Roberts - Chicken Fat
06. Dana Gillespie - Big Fat Mamas Are Back In Style
07. Rufus Thomas - Do The Funky Chicken

09. Johnny Cash - The Chicken In Black
10. Apostle Of Hustle - Animal Fat
11. Jack Jones - Dixie Chicken
12. Los Lobos - The Fat Man
13. Lynn Roberts - Chicken Fat (Instrumental)
14. Pat Boone - Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens
15. Dennis Weaver - Chicken Mash

Qu'est-ce Que C'est? -- It Don't Look Like Anything.

So I'm currently rereading (this is my third time through) Patricia Highsmith's novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. It's a lot darker and more complex than the movie (which I don't particularly care for -- watch John Malkovich play Tom Ripley in Ripley's Game for a much closer portrayal). The novel is disturbing the freaking hell out of me.

And then, this week, I went to see Okkervil River live, and their song "Westfall" is a disturbingly danceable portrayal of insane murder. So you all get to hear this. (I've been holding onto some of these songs since I put together the Crazy? Probably mix, since I thought I might do something like this.) If you didn't already do so, remember to download yesterday's post too, since only the original version of "Psycho Killer" is in this mix, and there are five more covers there.

01 - Talking Heads - Psycho Killer
02 - Johnny Cash - Delia's Gone
03 - Neko Case - Make Your Bed
04 - Violent Femmes - Country Death Song
05 - The Byrds - Pretty Polly

Crazy? Probably.

This is a musical primer on insanity, nerves, and how popular culture sees mental differences. It's not intended to be comprehensive by any means (I can think of five songs that belong here but are not included -- most notably John Conlee's "I Don't Remember Loving You"), but it's a nice 132 minutes anyway. I picked up most of these songs online over the last 15 months -- every time I saw a cover of the Gnarls Barkley song, I ganked it. In the end, I have 10 covers of that, plus the odd mashup and such. I also snagged a few songs here and here.

If you have suggestions for a second volume, please send them on. Suggestions with attached files will find a much better reception on my end, because I am very lazy.

(Edited to point out that Big'un halped compile this. Thanks, Big'un!)

01. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
02. Willie Nelson - Crazy
03. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - I Hear Voices

Music Via Chicago

So a few months ago my good friend who shall remain nameless (excepting his nickname, which is "Big'un") traveled on business to the city of Chicago. And I spent a few hours before that compiling music to make his trip more pleasant. It's certainly not a complete collection of songs about the city (as he points out, "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" is missing, and that one's just the tip of the iceberg).

However, it is a nice collection of blues and indie songs that help to capture, in some small way, the soul of the city. In fact, I collected too much music to fit onto one CD, so if you're burning it to a disc I recommend that you remove tracks 11, 13, and 19. At some point, I may expand this into a 2-disc set, if anyone else goes to Chicago.

1. Home To Emily (Theme From The Bob Newhart Show)
2. Via Chicago (Wilco)
3. Dear Chicago (Ryan Adams)
4. Chicago Promenade (Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, live)
5. Sweet Home Chicago (Robert Johnson)
6. A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Wish (Steve Goodman, live)
7. Chicago (Sufjan Stevens)
8. Chicago (Ladyslipper)
9. Chicago Seemed Tired Last Night (The Hold Steady)
10. Sweet Home Chicago (Taj Mahal feat. The Pointer Sisters)
11. Chicago (Microfilm, Sufjan Stevens cover)
12. Chicago X 12 (Rogue Wave)
13. Chicago (Frank Sinatra)
14. My Kind Of Town (Frank Sinatra)
15. On A Freezing Chicago Street (Margo & The Nuclear So And Sos)
16. Old Man Chicago (Alberta Cross)
17. Via Chicago (Jeff Tweedy, live)
18. Born In Chicago (The Paul Butterfield Blues Band)
19. Chicago (Sufjan Stevens, easy listening mix)
20. Blue Chicago Moon (Songs: Ohia)
21. Sweet Home Chicago (The Blues Brothers)
