Stagger Lee Saturdays - Samuel L. Jackson

This is from the soundtrack to Black Snake Moan. Sam Jackson's character here was inspired by R. L. Burnside, who does a mean Stag hisownself. And he's backed by Burnside's own band here, as well.

But where Burnside was quietly laughing at the evil Stag does, here Sam Jackson boasts, loud and proud, of the violence and the psychopathy that the song brings out in him. Sam also curses a lot more too, but that's only to be expected. Nobody curses as well as Sam Jackson.

Stagger Lee Saturdays - R. L. Burnside

R. L. Burnside was in the recording industry for almost 40 years, till his death in 2005. His life and work were a major inspiration for the film Black Snake Moan. His recording of Stag was the inspiration for Samuel L. Jackson's magnificent recording of the same song in the film, which we'll hear next week.

I love just how much joy R. L. gets out of Stag's meanness, with his laughing delivery of every line that includes a murder.
